Meeting a Thai woman’s family comes with a different set of rules — ‘sin sod’ (bride price), respect for elders, and financial expectations. What did family dynamics look like in your experience, and how did you handle it?
The sin sod conversation blindsided me. I wasn’t prepared for the idea that marriage involves a financial demonstration to the family. In the end, most of it was returned as a gift — it’s ceremonial as much as financial. But you need to understand what you’re walking into before that conversation happens at a family lunch.
Her family accepted me surprisingly quickly once they saw I was consistent and showed genuine respect. I showed up for family events, helped without being asked, learned a few phrases in Thai. You don’t need to be wealthy. You need to be respectful and present.
