Japanese dating culture is known for being slow, indirect, and reserved — at least early on. Foreign men often feel like they can’t read the signals. How did you navigate that, and when did things finally open up?
It took eight months before my Japanese girlfriend said anything remotely vulnerable to me. Eight months of pleasant conversation and shared activities and then one evening she just opened up. And everything changed. The patience required is real, but what’s underneath is worth it.
You have to stop trying to accelerate things. Every time I pushed for more depth faster, she retreated slightly. When I backed off and just enjoyed where we were, she moved toward me. The relationship built on her timeline, not mine. I had to make peace with that.
