In China, a woman’s family has enormous influence over who she dates and marries. Foreign men often feel judged, pressured, or excluded. How did you handle parents who weren’t thrilled about the relationship?
Her parents didn’t approve for the first year. We handled it by giving them time and showing them I was consistent — I kept showing up, kept being respectful, kept being present. Eventually they came around because the alternative was losing their daughter’s trust. Patience and consistency beat charm every time.
I learned to meet the family early, even if it’s uncomfortable. Trying to hide the relationship from her family creates a secret she has to maintain, and secrets are exhausting. Better to face the discomfort directly and let the family form a real opinion of you.
